This month the Mommalikeyou feature is dedicated to the phenomenal Cisca de Kock. This lovely lady came into my life last year and right from the start we struck up a friendship. She’s the kind of friend who always has your back, will be your biggest supporter, and will keep you in fits of giggles with the most beautiful, genuine smile. She’s also a remarkably intelligent powerhouse, who balances her family, home life, blog and is currently finalising her PhD (she makes me feel lazy!). Meet the beautiful Cisca!

Tell us a bit about what it was like to become a mom for you?
My birth story was like a scene out of a movie. I still remember feeling so overwhelmed the morning that my water broke at 36 weeks. My biggest fear was always that my mothering instinct would not kick in, and to be honest I thought I had at least two more weeks to prepare. I was wheeled into theatre, while my Husband was wheeled off to the ER (told you it was like a movie scene) – immediately when I heard Hudson’s first cries, my motherly instincts kicked in, and it felt like falling in love all over again. I wish that my husband could have experienced those first moments of meeting him.
What was your pregnancy like?
Strangely enough I didn’t have any cravings. The only thing that I kept on thinking would taste yum, were gherkins dipped in peanut butter. I suffered from morning sickness for the first three months and immediately started swelling all over. My feet literately grew over night from size 4 to size 7. I also developed carpal tunnel syndrome and had to have surgery after Hudson was born. On my 28 week visit to the gynaecologist I was diagnosed with a mild case of gestational diabetes, and to top that all off, I started getting an uneven skin tone around my mouth and chin area and my hair started falling out. I felt very self-conscious while being pregnant. I am very grateful to have such a loving husband, that constantly told me I was glowing, when I didn’t feel I was.
When you’re not being a momma, what do you do?
When I am not a mom and wife, I am a full time lecturer (Faculty of Education) and PhD candidate by day and a blogger by night!
What is It’s a Moms Life 2017 about and how did you come up with the idea to start blogging?
When I was five months pregnant, I lost my mom. She passed away from cancer – I was not prepared at all. This was my first pregnancy and when I lost her I felt that I needed her so much more. I knew that I would fall into a deep depression even before Hudson was born, but I had no idea how dark that dark place of depression could be. One night while pumping milk, I decided that I needed an outlet to express all my fears and joys of motherhood. With one hand holding the pump and the other hand holding my phone I created, It’s a Mom’s Life 2017. 2017 is the year that I became a first time Mom, and that’s when this rollercoaster of a journey began.
Any milestones for It’s a Moms Life 2017 yet?
For some this might not be a milestone, but for me it definitely was. I struggled so long with the idea to post about my PPD, and I wrote the post and deleted it so many times. I honestly thought that if I blogged about it, people would judge me and think I am weak. When I finally did the response and support was amazing. I received so many messages of women finding themselves in the same space that I did. And so many messages saying that my post helped them feel that they too are not alone. Any time that I can make someone feel like they are not alone, is definitely a milestone for me.
What advice would you share with anyone wanting to start a blog?
The best advice would be, have a perspective and a frame of reference. Sit down and write down your objectives of why you want to start a blog. Be unique and write about things that you love. Do not be discouraged if you only have a few views or followers in the beginning. Be patient, but most importantly be kind. The blogger sphere is big and yes, you can feel like just another number, but make sure that you always remember your values and stay true to who you are.
What’s in store for It’s a Mom’s Life 2017?
I love having the freedom of creating my own content, and I think that is how I see my blog growing from strength to strength. The more women I can help and support through my blog, the more fulfilling it becomes, and to me that is already a success.
What do you do to take time for yourself, away from Hudson, studying for your PhD and the blog?
I love a good cup of tea – if I can find a few minutes to brew the perfect cup then I am happy. Spoiling myself with a manicure and a pedicure now and again, prevents the beast from coming out of this Beauty.
As a mom, what’s in your handbag?
Wet wipes! Teething biscuits (a snack for Hudson and a snack for myself); and always a back up dummy.
Best thing about mommahood and would you want a sibling for Hudson?
The best thing about mommahood is seeing how much Hudson is growing and developing day after day. He is such a clever little boy, and so loving towards everyone, especially towards other toddlers. While pregnant, I always said that we would only have one. But seeing him grow up, I would love for him to have a sibling and to share things with.
What is Hudson into playing with right now?
He loves stacking blocks and riding his motorbike in the back yard. He has a yorkie brother and sister, and he has the best time playing with them too, although I am not sure that Charzi and Minka enjoy being chased around.
It’s a Mom’s Life 2017 has just turned one, what have you got planned to celebrate?
To celebrate this milestone, I’ve partnered with a few of my favorite brands. The first giveaway went live on Monday and ends this Friday. The winner will be announced on Saturday.
The second giveaway is a BIG one! One winner stands a chance of winning prizes to the value of R8000 – the number keeps growing by the day so who knows what the amount will be when the giveaway goes live on Monday 17 September. There’s a write up of both giveaways on my blog as well as direct links to the brands involved, so head over and check it out.
To top it off, in early October there will be a HUGE loop giveaway to the value of over R25 000. One winner takes it all! Make sure your post notifications are turned ON – you won’t want to miss out on this!
Thank you for sharing your story with us, Cisca! Be sure to go follow this lovely lady – her photos of Huds will make your ovaries flip-flop and she has the best giveaways!
