You know what they say, ‘summer bodies are made in winter’ – and guess what, ‘they’re’ right. I love being in the kitchen, cooking and baking with Soph. I love food. In fact, before deciding to go down the PR route, I was ready to enrol at Silwood School of Cookery. I thought it would be hilarious that I’d be known as ‘Chef Cook’ (my maiden name). Half way through my matric year, after watching Sliding Doors for the umpteenth time (the 1998 movie starting Gwyneth Paltrow), I decided I wanted to do events and Public Relations much like Helen in the movie – without the being fired part obviously. I digress, let’s just say I really enjoying cooking, and the delicious meals that go with it but after having children I really need to watch what I eat or the kilo’s pile on!
I’m on a continuous journey to get back to my pre-baby weight (a lot of us are, right?), which, unfortunately for me happens to be my wedding weight. I was comfortable in my skin then, and had confidence. Carla, a Health and Fitness Expert from Carla Smith – The Fitness Expert, has come to my aid and designed me a personalised eating plan, to help me reach my goals and regain a healthy lifestyle. Seriously, only after having babies did I get a sweet tooth, thanks kids! After a lifestyle, risk and nutrition screening she drew up a personalised plan for me.
I started with Carla’s eating plan, intermittently at first, but I could already feel the change in my body. After a Discovery Wellness Day at our company a couple of weeks ago, I felt relieved and a sense of accomplishment about my body, finally! I’ve decreased my Vitality age by 5 years, my waist measurements have gone down by four centimetres – the kick up my proverbial, generous backside that I needed, and the motivation I needed to continue on this journey.
A big thing for me has been to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Before Carla’s plan, three cups of coffee would substitute ‘breakfast’ – don’t ever skip breakfast!
Here’s a quick and simple smoothie breakfast my family loves:
Strawberry and Banana Smoothie
1 tbsp honey
350g strawberries (I just used the frozen variety from Woolies)
330 ml coconut water
200g plain, unsweetened yoghurt
Put all the ingredients into a blender or NUTRiBULLET and blend until smooth. I like to add in a tsp or so of cinnamon too. There really are no limits to what you can add into a smoothie – it’s a fabulous way to pack in extra nutrients and hidden veg for the kids too. So simple!
With some simple pre-planning and packing my meals the night before, I’m not ‘too lazy’ to skip a meal. My body responds well, as do most people, to no or low carbs – I had amazing results whilst Banting a couple of years ago, and found my headaches decreased immediately once eliminating those pesky but delicious carbs. Instead of drinking fizzy drinks, I buy the flavoured, sugar-free waters from either Woolies (the Strawberry and Mint one is my best!) or the Seltzer Grapefruit and Strawberry flavour. The fizz seems to trick me into thinking it’s a treat!
