Best Kids Party venues in Johannesburg!

I’ve visited loads of these places, been to parties at them and even had my own kid’s parties at some. The most stressful thing for me in thinking of my kids parties is where to have it. You’ll know by now I also run a Party Planning business called Bunting + Blooms, so I don’t find the ‘party’ part of it the hard part, quite the opposite, but finding the right venue for their parties may just give me my first grey hair! I find so many of the venues tick the right boxes but then have horribly run-down toilet facilities, no shade, or a biggie for me – nowhere to set up a cake and candy table. I really think there’s a gap in the market for somewhere that would tick all my boxes, who knows, maybe that’s what I need to create (one can dream!).

I plan parties months in advance, where I can, and I wish we were able to have all our parties at home but we just don’t have the garden space for 25+ kids and all the cars. Having parties at a venue then becomes a no-brainer, but I had an awful experience for Oli’s 2nd Birthday where I arrived at the restaurant to set up and nobody knew about the party! The manager who we had met with and emailed no less than 20 times had a bender of a party the night before and had not alerted his staff (in the month leading up to the party) that we were coming, even though we had pre-ordered food even. It took every ounce of self-restraint not to hunt him down, but in the end, thank heavens his staff were better organised than he was and no one knew the difference (although their name is definitely on the list below).

Certain venues may work better with specific themes – something I always stress unnecessarily over – but this should never be the deciding factor unless you want it perfectly matched. In that case, here are some generic party themed venues in and around Johannesburg that you might like the sound of, some venues may fit under more than one theme too.

A couple of things you need to take into consideration when you deciding on a venue (according to your needs, wants and budget):

  • Does the venue hire include exclusive use of the venue
  • How long to do you have to set up the party, and break down after the party
  • Does the venue hire include any tables/chairs/drinks dispensers/platters etc.
  • If it’s at a restaurant, are you allowed to bring in your own party packs, snacks for the kids, juice bottles and cake
  • Are you able to bring in your own entertainment or do you need to use their preferred suppliers
  • Are you able to light a braai or bring in a spit braai
  • Can you play music
  • Does the venue have a kitchen with a microwave or a fridge you can use to keep your treats cool until the guests arrive
  • Is there a ‘wet weather’ plan or cancellation fee

Last but not least, a deciding factor for many a Momma – FREE venues – i.e. no venue fee charged, but food etc. may be charged for – you will be surprised how many restaurants offer this, so enquire at your favourite, as well as memberships to sports clubs – some of them offer free venue hire if you are a member there! Parks are great for parties, you just need to be cognisant of maybe asking families to bring picnic blankets, and bring in some trestle tables, as well as that there may not be toilet facilities or electrical points or a covered area for shade or bad weather.
